Artists working in public spaces are often finding themselves facing what can be unfamiliar challenges when they have to navigate their own independentartistic process while keeping various actors satisfied: Actors with very different backgrounds and needs, potential users of a space/installation, peopleliving in the area, architects and city planners, municipalities and other local government bodies and sometimes even a private or public funder.
Navigating this intricate area of various interests can be a very big challenge when embarking on a public project.
In the spring of 2015 PLADS hosted a workshop in the Dome of Vision for a number of artists with experience in working in a public space. The overall theme was development of new potential installations, but the talk very quickly turned towards the various challenges the artists faced in the process. Therefore, Morten Bencke dived deeper into some of the questions raised, because they are relevant for both other artists working in public space, public and private institutions commissioning art works and the general public, who are often invited into the process somehow. Sometimes as co-creators and at other times as end-users.
